Rwanda orders Belgian Diplomats to vacate country over Congo conflict

Rwanda has severed diplomatic ties with Belgium, ordering all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours.

This move comes as tensions between the two nations escalate over their roles in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Rwanda’s decision is rooted in its belief that Belgium has consistently undermined its sovereignty, particularly in the context of the ongoing DRC conflict.

Rwanda’s Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement, accusing Belgium of employing “lies and manipulation” to foster a negative perception of Rwanda.

The statement reads, “Belgium has consistently undermined Rwanda, both well before and during the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo… Today, Belgium has clearly taken sides in a regional conflict and continues to systematically mobilize against Rwanda in different forums.”

President Paul Kagame has been vocal about defending Rwanda’s interests against what he describes as “neo-colonial interference” from Belgium, which ruled Rwanda as a colony until 1962.

Kagame has highlighted Belgium’s historical role in fueling ethnic extremism, which ultimately contributed to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Rwanda’s Foreign Ministry also criticised Belgium for its “destructive historical role” in Rwanda, stating that it has allowed Belgian territory to be used by groups that propagate genocide denial and sustain genocidal ideology.

The ministry emphasised that Rwanda’s decision reflects its commitment to safeguarding national interests and upholding sovereignty, peace, and mutual respect.

DON’T MISS THIS: Why you always fail, and how to fix it

In response, Belgium has declared Rwandan diplomats persona non grata, effectively expelling them from the country.

Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot described Rwanda’s actions as “disproportionate” and indicative of a preference for non-engagement over dialogue when disagreements arise.

This diplomatic standoff highlights the complex historical and political dynamics at play in the region.

As peace talks between the Congolese government and M23 rebels are set to begin in Angola, the situation remains volatile.
